Focus

  • Distinguish short and long vowel pairs.
  • Read vowels that appear before, after, above, below, or around a consonant.
  • Recognize simple vowels, diphthongs, and extra vowel signs.

Study path

  1. Start from the dotted-circle form so the vowel position is visible without treating อ as part of every vowel.
  2. Attach the same vowel to ก: ◌า becomes กา, ◌ิ becomes กิ, and เ◌ becomes เก.
  3. Pair every short vowel with its long version before memorizing large charts.
  4. Practice written position separately from spoken order.

Core ideas

Vowels attach to the consonant

Thai vowels are not written in one fixed location. They can sit before, after, above, below, or around the initial consonant, while the consonant remains the anchor of the syllable.

  • after vowel ◌า with ก กา
  • above vowel ◌ิ with ก กิ
  • below vowel ◌ู with ก กู
  • before vowel เ◌ with ก เก
  • before vowel แ◌ with ก แก
  • around vowel เ◌าะ with ก เกาะ

Length is meaningful

Short and long vowels can change both meaning and tone behavior. Read each pair as a length contrast: short first, long second. Then attach the pair to ก so the contrast becomes a real syllable.

  • a short ◌ะ กะ long ◌า กา
  • i short ◌ิ กิ long ◌ี กี
  • ue short ◌ึ กึ long ◌ื กือ
  • u short ◌ุ กุ long ◌ู กู
  • e short เ◌ะ เกะ long เ◌ เก
  • ae short แ◌ะ แกะ long แ◌ แก

Some vowels change shape with finals

Several vowels have one form in an open syllable and another form before a final consonant. Treat these as spelling patterns: กะ uses visible ◌ะ, but กัก uses ◌ั because the final ก closes the syllable.

  • short a open กะ closed กัก ◌ะ changes to ◌ั before final ก.
  • short o pattern โ◌ะ + final words คน / นม The visible โ◌ะ disappears and the short o is inferred.
  • oe open เจอ closed เดิน Open เ◌อ has a related เ◌ิ + final spelling pattern.

No-mark vowels must be inferred

Thai often leaves short a or short o unwritten in certain syllables. This is one reason full-word reading needs more than letter-by-letter decoding.

  • short o written คน read kon Inferred short o between ค and น.
  • short o written นม read nom Inferred short o between น and ม.
  • short a + short o written ถนน read tha-non Hidden vowels: ถ(a)น(o)น.

No-mark vowels usually appear in word-level consonant patterns. A short o is often inferred in a closed syllable with two consonants and no written vowel sign, such as คน or นม. A short a is often inserted between consonants inside a longer word, as in the first syllable of ถนน. Do not solve these only letter by letter; check the whole word pattern and pronunciation.

Quick reference

Position patterns

  • After: ◌า -> กา
  • Above: ◌ี -> กี
  • Below: ◌ุ -> กุ
  • Before: เ◌ -> เก
  • Around: เ◌าะ -> เกาะ
  • Before + after: เ◌า -> เกา

Shape changes before finals

  • ◌ะ + final -> ◌ั + final: กะ -> กัก
  • โ◌ะ + final often loses the visible โ◌ะ: คน and นม
  • เ◌อ + final often becomes เ◌ิ + final: เจอ -> เดิน-style spelling

See the vowel first, then attach it to ก.

Tap a card to hear the vowel name. Start with the dotted form, then read the same vowel attached to ก.

Dotted form to ก form

The dotted circle marks where the consonant goes.

Short or long?

Choose the length of the displayed vowel. Length affects both meaning and tone behavior.

◌ึ short
◌ื long

◌ุ short

Shape changes with finals

Some written forms change when a consonant closes the syllable.

◌ะ + final -> ◌ั + final กะ กัก

The short a sign changes when ก closes the syllable.

โ◌ะ + final -> final-only spelling โ◌ะ คน / นม

In many closed syllables the short o is inferred from the consonant pattern.

เ◌อ + final -> เ◌ิ + final เจอ เดิน

The oe-type vowel uses a different written shape before a final consonant.

No-mark vowels

Some short vowels are read from the word pattern even when no vowel sign is written.

คน kon

A short o is read between ค and น.

นม nom

A short o is read between น and ม.

ถนน tha-non

The first syllable has an inferred short a.
