Focus
- Recognize the full Thai consonant inventory.
- Group letters by shared initial and final sounds.
- Memorize the three consonant classes with color-coded groups.
Study path
- Read the alphabet once in order so the shapes feel familiar.
- Memorize the middle class first because it is small and forms the clearest tone-rule base.
- Learn the high class next, then treat the remaining common letters as low class.
- Compare letters with the same sound, such as ข / ค and ถ / ท, because their tone class is different.
Core ideas
Thai has more letters than sounds
The script has 44 consonant letters, but several letters share the same initial sound. This is why reading Thai depends on both the letter sound and the letter class.
- ข / ฃ / ค / ฅ / ฆ share a kh sound
- ฉ / ช / ฌ share a ch sound
- จ has its own j initial sound
- ศ / ษ / ส share an s sound
Consonant class is a reading tool
The class of the initial consonant combines with vowel length, syllable ending, and tone marks. Do not treat class as grammar decoration; it is part of the sound of the syllable.
Some letters behave differently at the end
A consonant can have one sound as an initial and another sound as a final. For example, จ starts with a j sound but closes as a t sound.
Obsolete letters still appear in complete charts
ฃ and ฅ are normally not used in modern spelling, but they remain part of the traditional 44-letter inventory and are useful when reading full reference tables.
