Chapter 3

Blending Initial Consonant and Vowel

Combine an initial consonant and a vowel sign into one readable open syllable, even when the vowel is written before, above, below, or around the consonant.

Focus

  • Find the initial consonant that anchors the syllable.
  • Attach the vowel sign to that consonant and blend the sound.
  • Notice vowel length and consonant class after the syllable is readable.

Study path

  1. Start with one familiar anchor, such as ก, and attach one vowel sign at a time: กะ, กา, กิ, กี, กุ, กู.
  2. Move the vowel sign around the same anchor: เก, แก, โก, เกาะ.
  3. Swap only the consonant after the vowel pattern is clear: กา, ขา, คา.
  4. Say the syllable first, then name the vowel length and consonant class.

Core ideas

The initial consonant is the anchor

Thai vowels attach to an initial consonant. The vowel can appear in several positions on the page, but the consonant remains the anchor for reading.

  • Before เก ก + เ◌ เ is written before ก, but ก is still the initial consonant.
  • Around เกาะ ก + เ◌าะ The vowel surrounds the anchor consonant.
  • Above กี ก + ◌ี The sign above ก belongs to the same syllable.

Blend first, classify second

Do not solve class, length, and tone all at once. First blend the consonant and vowel into a syllable. After that, mark the vowel as short or long and note the consonant class.

  • Short กะ ก + ◌ะ Read the syllable first, then notice the short vowel.
  • Long กา ก + ◌า The same anchor with a long vowel changes the reading.
  • Class ขา ข + ◌า Blend first. Then note that ข is high class.

One vowel can be reused with many consonants

Once a vowel pattern is familiar, keep it fixed and change only the consonant. This makes the writing pattern visible without turning the exercise into a tone table.

  • aa กา ขา คา same ◌า vowel Different initial consonants, same vowel sign.
  • ii ปี ผี พี same ◌ี vowel Read the syllables before comparing class.
  • uu ดู ถู ทู same ◌ู vowel The vowel pattern stays stable while the consonant changes.

Quick reference

Vowel positions

  • after: กา
  • above: กิ / กี
  • below: กุ / กู
  • before: เก / แก / โก
  • around: เกาะ

Reading formula

  • 1. Find the consonant anchor
  • 2. Attach the vowel sign
  • 3. Blend the syllable
  • 4. Note short/long vowel length
  • 5. Note consonant class for later tone work

Open syllables in this chapter

  • No final consonant yet
  • กะ is short; กา is long
  • กิ is short; กี is long
  • กุ is short; กู is long
