Chapter 4
Final Consonants
Study how written final consonants collapse into a smaller set of final sounds, including stop finals, sonorant finals, and glide endings.

Focus
- Recognize final sound groups instead of reading finals by initial sound.
- Separate stop finals, sonorant finals, and glide endings.
- Prepare for live/dead syllable decisions.
Study path
- Learn final groups by sound: -k, -t, -p, -ng, -n, -m, -y, and -w.
- Compare a letter as an initial and as a final.
- Practice final groups with long vowels first.
- Then add short vowels and watch how spelling changes.
Core ideas
Final letters group by sound
Many different written consonants can produce the same final sound. For reading, the final sound matters more than the letter's initial pronunciation.
Thai final sounds are unreleased
Stop finals such as -k, -t, and -p are clipped. They close the syllable but are not released like strong English final consonants.
- ก ข ฃ ค ฅ ฆ -> -k
- จ ช ฌ ฎ ฏ ฐ ฑ ฒ ด ต ถ ท ธ ศ ษ ส -> -t
- บ ป พ ฟ ภ -> -p
Sonorant finals keep the sound open
Sonorant finals such as -ng, -n, and -m do not end with the same clipped stop as -k, -t, or -p. The sound continues through the nose or mouth for a moment, so กาม ends with a resonant -m rather than a hard stop.
- กาง -> final -ng
- กาน -> final -n
- กาม -> final -m
Some letters are rare or unavailable as finals
ฉ, ซ, ผ, ฝ, ห, and ฮ are not normal final consonants in these lesson tables. ย and ว behave as glide endings, while อ is best treated as a vowel carrier.
Finals affect tone
The final sound helps decide whether the syllable is live or dead, which is one of the main inputs to the tone rule.
