Focus

  • Classify syllables as live or dead.
  • Use vowel length and final sound together.
  • Recognize why stop finals change tone behavior.

Study path

  1. First decide whether the syllable has a final consonant.
  2. If it ends in a sonorant final or a long open vowel, treat it as live.
  3. If it ends in a stop final or a short open vowel, treat it as dead.
  4. Only then combine the result with consonant class and tone mark.

Core ideas

Live syllables stay open or resonant

A live syllable ends with a long open vowel, a sonorant final such as -ng, -n, or -m, or a glide ending such as -y or -w. Sonorant finals keep the sound resonant for a moment.

  • กา
  • กาง
  • กาน
  • กาม
  • กาย
  • เกา

Dead syllables close sharply

A dead syllable ends with a short open vowel or a stop final such as -k, -t, or -p. Stop finals are unreleased: they close the sound abruptly without adding an extra vowel after the final consonant.

  • กะ
  • กัก
  • กัด
  • กับ

Length matters most when there is no sonorant final

A long open vowel is live, while a short open vowel is dead. With stop finals, the syllable is dead regardless of vowel length, but the length can still affect the tone outcome.

This is the bridge into tones

Tone rules are easier when live/dead classification is automatic. Read the syllable type before looking up the tone result.

Quick reference

Live endings

  • Long open vowel
  • -ng: ง
  • -n: ญ ณ น ร ล ฬ
