Core ideas
Silent-letter mark
The mark ์, often taught as thanthakhat or garan, indicates that the marked consonant is silent. It appears often in loanwords, names, and formal vocabulary.
- อาจารย์ - teacher
- วันเสาร์ - Saturday
- กอล์ฟ - golf
Repetition mark
The repetition mark ๆ repeats the word or phrase immediately before it. It is common in casual and formal Thai writing.
- บ่อย ๆ
- เด็ก ๆ
- มาก ๆ
Abbreviation marks shorten written Thai
ฯ can abbreviate a longer name or expression, and ฯลฯ works like etcetera at the end of a list.
- กรุงเทพฯ
- ฯลฯ
Not every written mark is a sound
Some marks tell you how to read, repeat, shorten, or pause. Separating sound marks from writing marks makes real text less intimidating.
Pinthu is reference notation
The dot below ฺ, called pinthu, is used in script reference, formal notation, and Pali/Sanskrit-style writing to show a bare consonant without an implied vowel. It is not a normal everyday Thai vowel or tone mark.
- กฺ - bare k in notation
- ทฺ - bare t/th-style consonant in formal notation
